​LAPIDARIUS MEDITERRANEO Project by Manuela Troilo

Ten years after my exhibition “Mediterrazione” in 2008 at Palazzo Valentini, curated by the Province of Rome—which already presented the Mediterranean as a place of transit for hopes, exoduses, and memory—and following a long, on-the-ground experience of what has been, and continues to be, the tragic epochal phenomenon of forced migration, I feel the need to represent, through a cohesive project, the lived experience of internalized pain. This pain has been shaped by the testimonies of refugees and asylum seekers with whom I have come into daily contact in recent years.

There arises an urgent need to restore dignity to those who have died at sea—this magnificent sea that is the Mediterranean—where an implacably blue sky looks on as tragedy unfolds, untouched by its beauty. Beneath the surface, however, the suffering of far too many people takes place, and the cry of the sea merges in chorus with the cry of humankind.

The project consists of a lapidarium, that is, a collection of plaques made of lava stone, enameled with metallic oxides at high temperatures, intended to restore memory to those who drowned in the Mediterranean. The first shipwreck recorded 268 confirmed victims, and this could mark the beginning of the path (268 lithos).

Lapidarius Mediterraneo is the title of the project. Each plaque, or lithos, measures 40 x 20 cm. Every piece is enameled in different colors, resistant to weather conditions, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor display without alteration of color. It is a body of work whose boundaries between painting and sculpture are fluid. It can be exhibited horizontally on the ground or vertically on a wall, arranged in sequences that lend themselves to creating a path or a labyrinth—one in which to lose oneself in pain and, at the same time, in the beauty of nature, which drowns in its waters the hopes, fears, and dreams of the victims of its unconscious mercilessness.

A distanza di dieci anni dalla mia mostra “Mediterrazione” del 2008  a Palazzo Valentini curata dalla Provincia di Roma che già vedeva il Mediterraneo luogo di transito di speranze, esodi e memoria, e dopo una lunga esperienza sul campo, di quello che è stato ed è, il tragico evento epocale dell’immigrazione forzata, sorge in me l’esigenza di rappresentare in un progetto organico il vissuto esperienziale del dolore introiettato attraverso le testimonianze dei rifugiati e richiedenti asilo con i quali sono entrata quotidianamente in contatto in questi ultimi anni.

Nasce l'urgenza di restituire dignità ai morti in mare, questo mare meraviglioso che è il mediterraneo, in cui il cielo di un azzurro implacabile resta a guardare  la tragedia che si consuma senza che la sua bellezza ne sia contaminata, solo sotto la superficie si consuma il dolore di tante troppe persone e l’urlo del mare si fonde corale all’urlo dell’uomo.

Il progetto consiste in un lapidario cioè un insieme di lapidi di pietra lavica smaltata con ossidi metallici ad alta temperatura che restituiscano memoria ai morti annegati nel mediterraneo. Il primo naufragio fu di 268 vittime accertate e questo potrebbe essere l’inizio del percorso (268 litos).

Lapidarius Mediterraneo è il titolo del progetto e ogni lapide o “litos” misura cm 40x20 ogni lapide è smaltata con colori diversi è resistente alle intemperie e può essere esposta all’interno e all’esterno senza che si alterino i colori, si tratta di un lavoro i cui confini non sono così definiti tra pittura e scultura e può essere esposto sia in orizzontale su pavimento che in verticale su una parete in file che si prestano a creare un itinerario, o un labirinto in cui perdersi nel dolore e al contempo nella bellezza della natura che affoga nelle sue acque le speranze, la paura, e i sogni delle vittime della sua inconsapevole inclemenza.
